2017 Predictions: Place Your Bets on the Next Hallmark Star Trek Ornament!

With Star Trek: Mission New York coming up this week it is expected we will see the 2017 Hallmark Star Trek ornament previews that were missing for the first time in years at Comic-Con in San Diego.  Due to a shared booth with LucasFilm Hallmark only revealed future Star Wars ornaments.

Since Comic-Con it has been revealed that the 2017 Star Trek ship ornament will be the U.S.S. Franklin from this summer’s Star Trek Beyond.  We still have not had an announcement of Hallmark’s Star Trek character or scene ornaments.  I fully expect we will see the rest of the 2017 lineup at Star Trek Mission New York coming up September 2-4 at the Javits Center.

It is likely that we will get the first of a Star Trek – The Next Generation Legends series since 2016’s Chekov was the last of TOS’s Legend series.  So look for a new Captain Picard hanging from your tree in 2017.

What Star Trek scene should we expect next year?  The answer is a little less clear. Assuming we will get a scene from The Original Series there are a few iconic scenes to choose from.  Here is my list of sixteen classics scenes and the odds that Hallmark reproduces them with an ornament.  Place your bets!

2017 Hallmark’s Star Trek Ship Ornament Announced

image

image

Lynn Norton

Hallmark sculptor Lynn Norton was at this week’s Star Trek Las Vegas convention and with him came news of the first ornament of 2017.  Star Trek Beyond’s U.S.S. Franklin will be soaring in for the 2017 holidays.

image

Hallmark’s 2017 U.S.S. Franklin Ornament

“Norton revealed that each ship takes him anywhere from 100 to 120 hours of work from start to finish. His first Star Trek ornament was in 1991 — a replica of the Enterprise model from the second series pilot in 1966. He explained that he had to modify the proportions of various parts of the ship — the size of the saucer, position of the nascelles, etc. — so it would fit into the Keepsake Ornaments display box.
Norton later told fans that a number of the Hallmark ornaments have been used as props on Voyager and Deep Space Nine including as a mobile for a baby on a Voyager episode and in the Dominion War DS9 episodes to help create the illusion of huge armadas.”

Hallmark Ornament Museum in Warsaw, IN

UPDATE: 02.21.19

“We love being in this community for years and years and years, but we made the tough decision that it’s time to retire,” said David Hamrick, curator of the Hallmark Keepsake Ornament Museum.

Retirement means that The Party Shop at 3418 Lake City Highway in Warsaw will close in three to four weeks. The Party Shop has housed the ornament museum since 1996.

“So, right now, we’ve actually had two different national museums that have contacted us inquiring about possibly acquiring the collection,” Hamrick said. “Yeah, honestly, I don’t see it staying here in Kosciusko County, but stranger things have happened, I guess.”

The challenge now is to keep the collection intact, keep it available to the public after the store closes and keep the memories flowing.

The Party Shop
3418 Lake City Hwy.
Warsaw, IN 46580
574-267-8787

Open 7 Days a Week!
Mon-Sat: 9:30AM-8:00PM
Sun: Noon-5PM

“This priceless collection is on display in over 30 oak cabins with glass fronts. It’s helpful to see the ornaments in a price guide, but when you can actually see every ornament made in person it is amazing. One of the first things you’ll see when you start with the early years 1973-1979 is that the vast majority of the ornaments are glass balls and the amount of designs offered was minimal. Over the last couple of years there have been over 300 designs per year.

image

image image

The Party Shop does NOT sell any of the ornaments within the Museum. We do have another room full of other Back Issue Hallmark Ornaments in stock from present to 1973. We also have a variety of other Hallmark collectibles, from Merry Miniatures, Miniature Ornaments, puzzles & more. If we do not have an ornament you are looking for, we will try to find it for you. We buy sell & trade Ornaments with collectors all over the world. We have shipped Ornaments to Australia, Japan, Europe & beyond. There are people who enjoy collecting & hunting for the Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments all year. If you are looking for a fun trip for your family, church group or bus group contact me to arrange a tour. We are easy to find located on US 30 in Warsaw, IN. We are in Northern Indiana between Ft. Wayne & South Bend.”

Star Trek: Discovery and U.S.S. Discovery NCC-1031

Big news from San Diego Comic Con!  The new Star Trek series has a name and it is Star Trek: Discovery (STD for short – oops).  With the new series comes a new flagship, the U.S.S. Discovery NCC-1031.  Look for a Discovery ornament maybe as soon as next year since Paramount will want to promote their new series as much as possible.

“Discovery is so intrinsic as a concept to the philosophy that is Star Trek and it felt like it was a beautiful way to acknowledge that spirit and also… what Star Trek has provided for me is an inspiration on where we’re going as a species and a planet… and it has given me so much hope for a better world because we need it in the world we’re living [in] right now. We need curiosity and we need inspiration and we need to find better versions of ourselves and we need to discover better versions of ourselves.” – Brian Fuller

“For hardcore Trekkies, the design of the ship is both comfortingly familiar, and surprisingly retro. And not exactly retro in a 1960’s or a 1990’s kind of way, but instead, in a pop-culture alternate-dimension kind of way. The U.S.S. Discovery is a throwback to an alternate dimension of the 1970s, when the fledgling Trek and Wars franchises blended together in concept art. The design for the U.S.S. Discovery on the new show is almost identical to designs that Ralph McQuarrie, the late and famous Star Wars concept designer, sketched for the original U.S.S. Enterprise back in 1976.  Back then, Paramount was planning to reboot Trek on TV with a show called Star Trek: Phase II .” Read more at…https://www.inverse.com/article/18731-star-trek-discovery-star-wars-influence.

No 2017 Hallmark Star Trek Ornament Previews at SDCC

image

Unfortunately, Hallmark did not preview their 2017 Star Trek line up at San Diego Comic Con.  It seems they are sharing a booth with LucasFilm and could only display LucasFilm products.  Star Wars fans were able to preview 5-6 of next year’s Star Wars ornament.

It hasn’t been confirmed but it is probably safe to assume we will get our Star Trek ornament previews at Star Trek: Mission New York, scheduled Sept. 2-4.

2017 Hallmark Star Trek Ornaments Preview Today

image

The San Diego Comic-Con has its preview night tonight, July 20, 2016 before it opens for business tomorrow.  Preview Night runs from 6:00 -9:00 pm local time. In what has become an annual tradition each July, expect to see images of the 2017 Hallmark Star Trek ornaments leak out today and tomorrow.

The Star Trek Legends Series appears complete with this year’s Chekov release so we may see a Next Generation Legends Series begin.  A ship from this month’s Star Trek Beyond seems likely but I am holding out hope for an Enterprise B.  As far as what scene we will get in 2017? Popular untapped episodes include The Doomsday Machine, Space Seed, The Enterprise Incident, Journey to Babel and Balance of Terror.  After the year we have had I am hoping for an ornament based off Let That Be Your Last Battlefield.

image

Looking even further into the future, 2018 will likely bring a new ornament based on January’s new Star Trek series.

So I guess this is a part of the Legends Series after all. This was promoted as “inspired” by the Legends Series as the 2015 Uhura was claimed to be the last in the series.  I’m not a real big fans of the sculptor bios on the back of the boxes either.

Chekov looks a little like one of The Monkees if you stare at him too long.

Kirk looks a bit iffy.

Not sure Jake “got it right” when it came to Kirk’s face.

The Star Trek 50th Anniversary Enterprise!  A much better ornament than the dull gold plastic look images have shown.

July 2016: A Big Month for Hallmark and Star Trek

July is always a huge month for Hallmark with their annual release of ornaments but 2016 seems to have more crammed in it than normal.

This is what we have to look toward to…

July 1st-20th

image

Preorders are all over eBay for the SDCC exclusive Enterprise ornament from the pilot episode of the original Star Trek series.  There are a wide range of asking prices but $120 seems to be a common price tag.

San Diego Comic-Con sneak preview from 6:00-9:00 P.S.T.  Guests will get their first looks at Hallmark’s 2017 Star Trek line-up.

July 21st-24th

image

San Diego Comic-Con officially opens to the public.  The convention exclusive Enterprise will be available in limited quantities each day.  Expect a flood of ornaments on eBay and prices to drop under the preorder costs.  Although it is a covention exclusive ornament, Hallmark has announced it will be available at two additional conventions later in 2016.

image

July 22nd

Star Trek Beyond premieres and with it the possibilities of future Star Trek ornaments.

2016 SDCC Exclusive Enterprise Ornament Preorders

Preorders are beginning to show up with regularity on eBay for the 2016 Enterprise that premieres at the San Diego Comic-Con from July 20-24.

Current prices range from a Buy-It-Now on April 27th for $164.99 after shipping to an winning auction bid of $101.85 including delivery on June 20th.  Most prices seem to be running around $120-$130 delivered.

Once the public actually has their hands on these ornaments expect prices to drop a little in the short term with a bounce in value next year.

No word yet on how many will be produced in this limited run.  It is scheduled to be available at two other conventions later this year.
Star Trek: Mission New York – September 2-4, 2016
New York Comic-Con – October 6-9, 2016

Multiple convention releases is something that Hallmark has not done in the past with the same ornament but even with higher availability, the original Enterprise as a visual “hallmark” of the series, will still prove to be long sought after in the coming years.

Interview of Nicholas Meyer by Ryan Britt of Den of Geek…

“I think it’s going to be a different Star Trek. And I think that is probably good, because the thing that mainly troubles me about Star Trek is the fear of it being maybe re-treads of itself. Bryan [Fuller] has ideas, some of which I’ve heard, that are innovative and different. Different is what got me interested.

“The Undiscovered Country—according to Bryan [Fuller]—is a real sort of taking off point, or touchstone for how I guess he’s thinking about the direction of the new show. I don’t want to be misquoted and I don’t want to misquote him, but he’s fond of that film. Let’s put it that way. -Nicholas Meyer

Interview of Bryan Fuller by Scott Huver of moviefone…

“I think we will be seeing lots of crews in the story. One of the things that is exciting for me is that we are telling a “Star Trek” story in a modern way. We’re telling a 13-chapter story in this first season. It’s nice to be able to dig deep into things that would have been breezed passed if we were doing episodic and had to contain a story to an episode.

“It’s going to be weekly. And what it does allow us is, we are not subject to broadcast standards and practices. So we can have profanity if we choose — not that I want to see a “Star Trek” with lots of profanity. But we can certainly be more graphic than you would on broadcast network television.” -Bryan Fuller

Where is the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-B?

Hallmark has released all but one of the major Enterprise ornaments but how long until we get the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-B?

The NX-01 was released in 2002.  A version of the famous original Enterprise (NCC-1701) was released in 1991, 1995 (mini), 1996, 2006 and two versions in 2016. 2005 gave us the NCC-1701-A.  2015 saw the release of the NCC-1701-C from Yesterday’s Enterprise.  The Next Generation’s NCC-1701-D was first released in 1993 and followed twife in 1995 (mini) and 2012.  The NCC-1701-E from First Contact was released in 1998 and again in 2001 (mini).  The Star Trek series was “rebooted” when the film series offered up an alternate timeline and an alternate Enterprise. An ornament soon followed in 2010 to show off this new Enterprise.

Hallmark even gave us the unlikely release of a future’s version of the Enterprise from the last episode of the Next Generation series.  The 2007 release has the familiar NCC-1701-D from the series but now sports a third nacelle.

Hopefully on July 20, 2016 we hear news of the NCC-1701-B’s 2017 release.

San Diego Comic-Con July 20-24

image

“With attendance topping 130,000 in recent years—in a convention center facility that has maxed out in space—the event has grown to include satellite locations, including local hotels and outdoor parks. Programming events, games, anime, the Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival, and the Eisner Awards all take place outside of the Convention Center, creating a campus-type feel for the convention in downtown San Diego.

Over the years, Comic-Con has become the focal point for the world of comics conventions. The event continues to offer the complete convention experience: a giant Exhibit Hall (topping over 460,000 square feet in its current incarnation); a massive programming schedule (close to 700 separate events in 2014), featuring comics and all aspects of the popular arts, including hands-on workshops and educational and academic programming such as the Comics Arts Conference; anime and film screenings (including a separate film festival); games; the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, the “Oscars” of the comics industry; a Masquerade costume competition with prizes and trophies; an Autograph Area; an Art Show; and Portfolio Reviews, bringing together aspiring artists with major companies.

Comic-Con has presented literally thousands of special guests at its conventions over the years, bringing comics creators, science fiction and fantasy authors, film and television directors, producers, and writers, and creators from all aspects of the popular arts together with their fans for a fun and often times candid discussion of various art forms. The event has seen an amazing array of comics and book publishers in its Exhibit Hall over the years. Over it’s four-and-a-half decade-plus history, Comic-Con International has continually presented comic books and comic art to a growing audience. That love of the comics medium continues to be its guiding factor as the event moves toward its second half-century as the premier comic book and popular arts style convention in the world.”
