STAR TREK™ Communicator STAR TREK™
If you had to invent a futuristic communications device, what would it look like? Decades before flip phones became commonplace, the visionary prop artists of STAR TREK created this convincing, portable, and highly desirable method for 23rd century Starfleet crew members to keep in touch with each other. Its transmissions could cross great distances, and its functions included a locator that anticipated today’s GPS.
Open the lid and press the buttons inside to see lights flash and hear portions of actual communicator conversations from the original STAR TREK television series.
BATTERY-OPERATED. Batteries included. Instructions printed inside box.

Pros: Looks great hanging from the tree in the open position.
Cons: I wish the ornament was a tad larger to match an actual screen-used communicator. Perhaps Hallmark was restricted to a smaller scale.

Artist Inspirations: Star Trek Gadgets

Top Left: Screen used tricorder. From the Paul G. Allen Collection at the Henry Museum.
Bottom Left: Episode image showing internals with door dropped down.
Middle Top and Bottom: The 2018 Hallmark tricorder.
Right: A much longer strap was used on the show so it could be positioned near the hip when hanging from the shoulder.

Left: From the Paul Allen collection at the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame in Seattle, Washington.
Left: A midgrade hand phaser from TOS Set Decorator John Dwyer’s collection. Photo from Star Trek Prop Authority.
