Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy™ STAR TREK™ Legends
Despite humble insistence that he was a simple country doctor, Leonard H. McCoy proved himself time and again to be one of the most valued medical minds in all of Starfleet. Aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, Dr. McCoy was known as the Chief Medical Officer, with responsibilities for the operation of the starship’s sickbay as well as for the health and well-being of its crew. To Captain James T. Kirk, McCoy was much more, serving as the friend, adviser, and voice of conscience that Kirk affectionately nicknamed “Bones.”
Each of the ornaments in this series features a different character from the original STAR TREK™ television series.

Additional information: #3 in the Star Trek Legends Hallmark Ornament Series. He called himself a simple country doctor, but time and again he proved himself to be one of the most valued medical minds in all of Starfleet. Straight from the U.S.S. Enterprise with hypospray in hand, Dr. McCoy comes ready for your tree as the third Keepsake Ornament in the Star Trek™ Legends series.
Pros: An improvement over the prior Spock entry in the Legends series. The stance and uniform help anchor the character well.
Cons: The likeness is close, but not quite there. Without the Starfleet uniform, it might be hard to recognize him as McCoy.

U.S.S. Defiant” STAR TREK™ Special Edition
Commissioned in the mid-23rd century, the U.S.S. Defiant served as one of 13 Constitution-class starships that explored strange new worlds on behalf of the United Federation of Planets. In the classic Star Trek episode “The Tholian Web” (1968), the Defiant became trapped in an area of spatial interphase between universes, the properties of which gave the starship an eerie green glow before it was consumed by a rift to suffer an uncertain fate.
This special edition ornament is one of 700 issued for and only available at the 2011 New York Comic-Con Event.

Pros: Every detail on this ornament is absolutely glorious. The way it glows when the lights go out perfectly captures the eerie tone of The Tholian Web. Its eerie glow and iconic shape make it a true standout in the TOS lineup.
Cons: None. This one’s a masterpiece and deserves every bit of its glowing reputation.

Additional information: 45th anniversary of Balance of Terror.
Pros: This ornament boasts accurate detailing and a stunningly crafted underbelly. It’s well-balanced and visually striking—one of the finer additions to the Star Trek ship collection.
Cons: Unfortunately, the intricate underbelly design is rarely visible when hanging in a typical tree display. To showcase its best features, hang it high and at a slight tilt to give it the spotlight it deserves.

When filming began on “Balance of Terror,” producer Bob Justman placed a call to his ace up the sleeve — special effects designer Wah Chang. The uncredited artist was the brilliant creative mind behind the communicator, the Salt Vampire, the Tribbles and other iconic Trek costumes and props. Justman asked Chang to fabricate a new alien ship with a twist. He wanted something like a bird swooping down upon its enemy to wipe them out.

Wah Chang was a non-union contractor. The Bird of Prey prop was returned to him after the production of “Balance of Terror.” Thinking it was a one-off use, Chang had disposed of the ship. After much back and forth, producers came to the revelation and determined the budget could not afford to rebuild the prop.

In the season two episode “The Deadly Years,” the Enterprise again encounters some Romulan Bird of Prey ships. To create the space scenes, stock footage was used. The following season, our heroes again face off against the Romulans in “The Enterprise Incident.” However, Spock notes an immediate difference: “Intelligence reports Romulans now using Klingon design.”

Pros: Valerie Shanks’ rookie Star Trek ornament is a strong debut. The likenesses are solid, but what truly stands out is the dynamic interaction—Spock’s firm grasp on McCoy’s wrist contrasted with the doctor’s head and shoulders pulling away—perfectly capturing the tension of the scene.
Cons: The only real drawback? No lighting on the back panel, which would have added depth and atmosphere to this dramatic moment.

Pros: Instantly recognizable as the iconic Vulcan, this ornament captures Spock’s essence with clarity and presence.

Pros: The Legends series is a fantastic concept—honoring each of the iconic original crew members with a fresh take. It’s high time we see similar treatments for TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise.
Cons: Kirk’s profile view captures his likeness better than the head-on angle, where some facial detail is lost. The smaller scale compared to the ’90s character ornaments sacrifices a bit of the intricate sculpting we’re used to, but it remains a respectable tribute.

“Hailing frequencies are open.” From the command deck of the Starship Enterprise, Lieutenant Uhura breaks the silence of deep space. As communications officer, she transmits messages in all the languages of the known galaxy. Hers is often the first human voice to be heard by alien races in unexplored star systems. Both Uhura’s name and her spirit reflect the Swahili word for “freedom.”
Usually seen in “engineering and security” red, Lieutenant Uhura wore this striking “command” gold uniform in only one original series episode, “The Corbomite Maneuver” (1966).
This special event edition repaint of the 2007 Lieutenant Uhura limited quantity ornament was created for exclusive distribution at major collector events and conventions.

Pros: As a repaint of the fantastic 2007 Uhura ornament, this gold-uniform version is absolutely top tier—elegant, vibrant, and just as iconic. A must-have for collectors who appreciate subtle variations.
Cons: That factual error on the back of the box? Not a dealbreaker. In fact, it adds a bit of charm and character to an otherwise flawless release.

That’s MY fact-based error! Dang it, I carry that as one of my greatest shames. (There are a LOT of them.) I just blanked out Uhura’s appearance in “Mudd’s Women” when I wrote that off the top of my head on a short-notice assignment.

That ornament was produced in 2007 for a speculative Hallmark appearance at Comic-Con International that ultimately didn’t happen. When we went in 2008 only to display, we recognized the opportunity we were missing by not having exclusives. As we planned for the 2009 event, I mentioned that somewhere in our warehouse was a pallet of product we could take to the show. Someone managed to track it down, and thus the exclusive was made available.

The summer of 2008, though, when we believed there would be no future for these ornaments, I was given a handful of the ornaments to donate to an auction for a fundraiser at the Shore Leave convention in Hunt Valley, Maryland. I believe three of them were auctioned. I brought back two of them signed by Nichelle Nichols, who was a guest at the convention. One of the ornaments met a cruel fate when it was dropped and shattered.

So where did the signed ornaments go? I gave one to Anita Marra Rogers because she certainly should have one. The other went to my uncle, who was an avid Keepsake Ornament collector until his passing.

Logic or loyalty? Spock remains true to both in “The Menagerie,” a Star Trek original series two-parter from 1966. Written by series creator Gene Rodenberry, the award-winning episode incorporates “pre-Kirk” footage from an unaired installment that was originally set to be the pilot episode. Spock and Kirk find themselves at Starbase 11, where they meet Spock’s previous captain, Christopher Pike. Now burned and paralyzed from an accident, Pike can no longer walk or talk. Communicating with flashing lights controlled by his brainwaves, he can only answer yes or no…and Spock is the only one who can help him! His predicament and the mutinous lengths to which Spock will go for his former captain and friend lead to one of the series’ most well-known adventures.

Pros: Fans of the classic The Menagerie episode will appreciate the blinking light detail—it’s a subtle but effective nod to the story’s mysterious and eerie tone.
Cons: While 2015’s The Needs of the Many ornament gets plenty of criticism, this lesser-known Menagerie piece is even darker in mood and design. That feeling is heightened today, especially with Pike’s character being richly developed and beloved in Strange New Worlds. It’s a somber reminder of his origins that may not resonate with every collector.

Like a dangerous predator slyly lurking in the cold reaches of space, a Klingon battle cruiser is usually NOT a welcome sight for the crews of other Federation starships.
Press the button on the ornament to see the Klingon Battle Cruiser’s lights illuminate.

Pros: The detailing on this ornament is truly unmatched, surpassing even the beloved 1994 Klingon Bird-of-Prey. It’s a bold, commanding piece that stands out in any collection.
Cons: However, when it comes to lighting, the 1994 Bird-of-Prey still holds the edge with a more striking illumination effect.

Cons: Lighting is great but missing bridge lights that would have added that final cinematic touch.

STAR TREK™ Communicator STAR TREK™
If you had to invent a futuristic communications device, what would it look like? Decades before flip phones became commonplace, the visionary prop artists of STAR TREK created this convincing, portable, and highly desirable method for 23rd century Starfleet crew members to keep in touch with each other. Its transmissions could cross great distances, and its functions included a locator that anticipated today’s GPS.
Open the lid and press the buttons inside to see lights flash and hear portions of actual communicator conversations from the original STAR TREK television series.

Pros: A sharp, nostalgic design that looks fantastic hanging from the tree in the open position—instantly recognizable and a nice tribute to classic Trek tech.
Cons: Slightly undersized compared to a screen-used communicator, which leaves you wanting when holding it.

“The Trouble With Tribbles” STAR TREK™
One of Star Trek’s most memorable episodes, “The Trouble With Tribbles,” first aired in 1967. The trouble with these soothing little fur balls is that they reproduce at warp speed and go boldly through Space Station K-7 eating anything that’s not nailed down – including an entire shipment of grain entrusted to Captain Kirk’s care! In the end, however, the tribbles – who hate Klingons – expose a Klingon agent who has poisoned the grain. As a parting gift, the remainder of them are beamed aboard the enemy ship, where Mr. Scott promises they’ll be “no tribble at all.”
Press the button on the base of the ornament to hear Captain Kirk speak and see the troublesome tribbles fall from the overhead compartment.

Additional information: This is artist Don Palmiter’s on Hallmark Star Trek ornament.
Pros: A brilliantly designed ornament that brings one of Star Trek’s most beloved comedic moments to life. Kirk in his iconic green wrap uniform is always a win—and the falling tribbles? Absolutely delightful.
Cons: As with other small-scale scene ornaments, facial details suffer, making Kirk’s likeness borderline disturbing. And while the tumbling tribbles are clever, the audible clicking as they fall is very noticeable. This ornament is HEAVY.
