Update on Last Month’s Defiant eBay Auction

A 2011 Defiant ornament went up for auction in July that had a few red flags. The seven day auction was originally launched with a $350 “Buy it now” option. In less than 9 hours it had received three bids before it was listed as sold, six days prematurely, for $51. It seems the ornament was relisted on eBay by the original seller and sold for $299.

Well, I received an update today from the would-be buyer that explains how everything went down.

“This was a rip off. I bought the ornament from Nacho at first he ended the auction because he had a buy now at $350 so he ended it I paid $51 then relisted it for $299 so I was the same buyer both totaled $350 which was the buy now price. I waited 2 weeks and he never shipping it. I opened a case he then shipped it but it was not a 2011 Enterprise in fact it was a part for a RV. I don’t believe he ever had it. I got all my money back and left bad feedback warning others to stay away!”

Fortunately, this buyer was able to get his money back. We appreciate him filling us in on the details.

2011 Hallmark Defiant Sold

A 2011 Defiant ornament went up for auction yesterday. The seven day auction was originally launched with a $350 “Buy it now” option. In less than 9 hours it had received three bids before it was listed as sold, six days prematurely, for $51.

UPDATE: It seems the ornament was relisted on eBay by the original seller and sold for $299. Things were certainly sketchy with this whole auction where it appears the seller tried to circumvent the system to maximize his profit. Little does the seller know, this ornament has been getting $1200 – $1900.

2022 Storyteller Packaging

Hallmark’s third year of Star Trek Storytellers brings us our third version of packaging design. The 2021 Storytellers had an ornament image that was roughly 20% larger than its 2020 predecessors. The 2022 Lt. Commander Scott ornament has a large front image that takes up the majority of the packaging face conforming with the rest of the 2022 Hallmark lineup.

Although Hallmark stores (at least mine) are stocking Storytellers in their original packaging, Hallmark’s website has photos of the 2020-21 ornaments in updated 2022 packaging. No word if this is something that will actually be available in stores or if it is simply for marketing uniformity.

2021 Picard Ornament Sold on eBay

A rare Hallmark Picard ornament was sold today in an eBay auction. The 2021 ornament originally appeared on Amazon late last year but was never widely available and quickly became unavailable.

The ornament packaging offered for the eBay auction was in horrible condition (see below) yet it was still able to fetch $132.35 with shipping. There is no word whether the Picard ornament will make another appearance online or in stores this holiday season or if it was just a limited quantity one-hit wonder.

Cracked.com’s Two Most Depressing Star Trek Ornaments

“Jeffrey Hunter refused to film additional scenes as Pike, which is why we got a story that allowed another actor to play the part under heavy make-up and a giant facial scar shaped like the Falkland Islands. Amazingly this convoluted plan to cut costs and buy time resulted in an acclaimed two-part episode that welcomed Pike into Star Trek canon – and it also gave us the second-most depressing Star Trek Christmas ornament of all time.”

“A Christmas ornament that lovingly recreates the famous scene in which one of the main characters slowly dies from radiation poisoning. Here’s your greatest tragedy dangling from a tree. Merry fucking Christmas, Spock fans!

Star Trek Transporter Water Globe Coming in August

Hallmark appears to be expanding their Star Trek universe. The Star Trek water globe, available in August, seems to be a direct descendent of Hallmark’s take on the Keepsake Table Toppers (2016’s “To Boldly Go” and 2019’s Transporter). The water globe has the familiar Star Trek character figures and employs the light and sound technology seen in the Keepsake line for years.

It has yet to be seen how the water globe will be marketed but it is possible it will be in stores as an off-season product since it will not be under the Keepsake label.

“Paint job was horrible. I know that when I am purchasing a Hallmark product, I have an expectation of receiving a quality product. It should be gift-worthy. When I received the Picard ornament, I was, frankly, shocked. If I had had the opportunity to examine beforehand, I would have passed this by completely.

What a retched paint job. This is Captain Jean Luc Picard, not the Joker! Workmanship matters. Pride in ones work should matter. Where is the quality control in such things? Shame on you for releasing such a poor quality item.”

“Smaller than expected. This was good quality sturdy as any other hallmark ornaments. I was a little disappointed on the size. We have all the other Star Trek captain ornaments and was adding Picard to the collection although he is almost half the size of the others. Still a great ornament just strange that they decided to make him differently sized than the others.”

HSTO: ”That has certainly crossed my mind and it would be pretty easy to alter the red version of Uhura (and the glow in the dark Defiant) and then print a box. I began posting the ornament listings by seller for this very reason.”

Artist Inspirations: 1992 Galileo Shuttlecraft

The Galileo’s unfortunate condition in 2012 as it was going up for up auction.
Top: 2013 image after restoration. The Galileo ornament was quite an accurate sculpt for 1992. The only standout differences are the rounded roof rails that were straightened and the lack of landing pads.
Galileo’s unveiling at Johnson Space Center in Houston where it has resided since 2013.
The restored shuttlecraft was used for an episode of Star Trek Continues, 2014’s ”Fairest of Them All”.

Artist Inspirations: Tabletop Transporter (2019)

In what first appears to be a sculpt that would likely be an aggregate of different poses turns out to be from one image.

All three characters in the same pose, phasers on their sides and tricorder hanging from McCoy’s right shoulder.

Sculptor, Orville Wilson, took a few liberties by slimming down the uniforms while bulking up the physiques. I would be happy to have Mr. Wilson commissioned to design a statue in my ”likeness” after I am gone.
