Mission Chicago Announced, Mission New York Revisited

As part of the First Contact Day (April 5) festivities it was announced that in 2022 there will be a Star Trek: Mission Chicago event. This convention is the only officially licensed Star Trek event in the U.S. by CBS now that Star Trek Las Vegas has been replaced with The 55-Year Mission Tour in Las Vegas. ReedPop, who is putting on Mission Chicago, was behind events like New York Comic Con, MCM Comic Con London, Star Wars Celebration and Star Trek: Mission New York. It is expected that annual Missions in rotating cities will follow.

Newsfeed:
We invite you to Star Trek: Mission Chicago– the ultimate Star Trek fan experience for all ages! Boldly explore the past, present and future of the celebrated franchise while embracing the ideals of a diverse and inclusive future that remains at the center of one of the most iconic brands of all time. Enjoy three full days of interactive exhibits, major announcements, exclusive merchandise, celebrity guests, and more from the ever-evolving Star Trek universe.

Star Trek: Mission Chicago is coming to McCormick Place in Chicago IL, April 8th to April 10th 2022.

In light of this announcement it seems only fitting to revisit 2016’s Star Trek: Mission New York which took place during Star Trek’s 50th Anniversary. To celebrate the anniversary, Hallmark displayed all 81 Star Trek ornaments that had been released up to that time (actually 80, “To Boldly Go” was still just a cardboard image).

Unfortunately, most of the photos of the Star Trek display were taken from a distance.

The gallery, in the form of a transporter chamber, stood beside Hallmark’s event booth. It was comprised of seven tall, vertical windows each holding a dozen or so ornaments.

Happily, one Star Trek fan posted a YouTube video of the ornaments which you can view at the bottom of this page. Below are the best screen caps I could get from IoMGeek’s September 3, 2016 video. Let me know if anyone has any photos of Hallmark’s ornament gallery they would like to share.

It’s 1992 and You’re Hosting a Hallmark Event…What Are the Five Star Trek Terms You MUST Know? (002LAN.)

In 1992, Hallmark put on a Galileo Landing Party event at stores across the country. The Galileo was the follow up ornament to the bestselling Enterprise the year before. Hallmark decided to educate their sales associates with five key STAR TREK terms in preparation of the party. Take a look below at what they considered crucial information.

If you have access to a STAR TREK costume, wear it during your Landing Party event. It will add to the festivities!

During your Party, it might be helpful if you are familiar with STAR TREK lingo. Here are some terms to know:

Shuttlecraft Galileo – Small spaceship that transfers up to 8 passengers and 2 operators to the starship U.S.S. Enterprise.
U.S.S. Enterprise – The starship that transports the STAR TREK crew on its missions.
STAR TREK Mission – “To seek out new worlds and new civilizations…to boldly go where no man has gone before.”
Klingons – Once-enemies, now allies of the Federation.
Federation – League of planets throughout all galaxies that are allied for peace.

You Are The Key
To The Success Of This Event.
Live Long And Prosper!

Full-page color ads will also appear in “Official STAR TREK« Fan Club Newsletter” magazine (August 21 issue) and in “StarLog” on September 1. PopMinded Artwork by Marceli Colato

If you have picked up any Star Trek event exclusive ornaments since 2018 you may have noticed the new black box design. It is an all black design that stands out against the white boxes Hallmark has used since 2006. With this change, on the sides of the box, is a gloss black doodle-inspired artwork on a flat black background that can go unnoticed unless the light catches it just right.

This artwork was created by Marceli Colato who also made drawings for Star Wars, Marvel, Disney, DC Comics and Harry Potter. “I was able to create cohesive branding that would be used in a variety of spaces, including visual merchandising, print/digital marketing, packaging designs, and unique gift product” says Colato.

Below is the complete piece of artwork Colato created for the Star Trek PopMinded by Hallmark line. Can you “spot” all the references?

More Star Trek “Surprises” Coming In 2021

The Spock and Chekov ornaments have now been revealed as the latest two entries into the Mirror Mirror Storytellers series and with that Kevin Dilmore has promised some future Star Trek surprises later this year. Dilmore, if you are unaware, is the nexus where Hallmark and Star Trek collide. He is a Senior Writer at Hallmark Cards and author/coauthor of Sci-fi novels that include Star Trek adventures.

2022 will bring us the final two Star Trek Storytellers, McCoy and Scotty. So what will we see later this year? A third Tribble? Lower Decks stuff? The Enterprise B ornament is a huge long shot but now that we have the Enterprise tree topper I can’t think of a more discussed ornament.

Still Waiting on 2021 Hallmark Star Trek Ornament Previews

We sit here in December and still have no official announcement of the 2021 Hallmark Star Trek ornaments.  The ornament previews usually are presented at the fan conventions beginning in July but COVID-19 has barreled its way into everyone’s lives disrupting everything.

The current plan is to have all of the Star Trek Storytellers releases from 2020 and 2021 to be available through 2022 until the complete line has been released.

Trekmovie.com Reviews 2020 Hallmark Ornaments

Every year, collectors anxiously await the release of Hallmark’s next Star Trek Keepsake ornaments. The first Star Trek Hallmark ornament was the original USS Enterprise NCC-1701 in 1991. Since then, Hallmark has produced at least one Star Trek ornament with lights and sound every year, as well as some without the bells and whistles. And with Christmas two months away, it’s time to start thinking about the holidays.

For 2020, the folks at Hallmark have outdone themselves. Not only are there 3 new Star Trek Keepsake ornaments,  there’s also a large tree topper, and all are themed around the classic episode “Mirror, Mirror,” And together, they tell a story, for real.

2020 Star Trek Las Vegas Convention Cancelled

It now comes as no surprise that 2020’s last convention has been cancelled due to COVID-19. As Kevin Dilmore said last month the Vegas convention was 2020’s most likely remaining event to show the 2021 Hallmark Star Trek ornament previews. Kevin, if you’re reading, we would like to offer this site as a vehicle to announce Hallmark’s 2021 Star Trek ornaments.

Here is Creation Entertainment’s official announcement:

During this pandemic crisis, Creation Entertainment remains steadfast in keeping the health and safety of our attendees, celebrities and staff as our top priority. While we had hoped to present our Official Star Trek Convention on December 9-13, 2020, due to ongoing local, federal and international protocols, we are unable to do so.

We will be next returning again to our traditional time of year and will be back in Vegas on a new date: August 11-15, 2021 at the Rio All-Suites Resort Hotel and Casino, and its beautiful state-of-the-art convention center!

The year 2021 marks the 50th Anniversary of Creation Entertainment, the 55th Anniversary of Star Trek, the 20th Anniversary of our convention in Las Vegas and Gene Roddenberry’s 100th birthday year. It’s the perfect time to celebrate and no city is better than Las Vegas to do just that!

We are renaming the convention “Creation Entertainment Presents The 55-Year Mission Tour”. We’ll have over 100 celebrity guests as usual, multiple tracks of non-stop programming, contests, music, cosplay and surprises, plus partying galore. We’ll immerse our attendees into the positive and loving atmosphere with thousands of other fans, as we all celebrate Gene Roddenberry’s legacy. CBS is not an official partner of this event.

If you wish to hold your same reserved seat or general admission, you do not need to do anything. Your tickets and same seating will be transferred to the new 2021 date and updated tickets will be sent to you via the email address you used at the time of purchase within a few weeks. Your 2020 ticket will no longer be valid.

2021 Hallmark Star Trek Ornament Previews Today? *UPDATED*

We normally get sneak peeks of Hallmark’s future ornaments in mid-July at San Diego Comic Con but like just about everything in 2020 it was cancelled.

In recent years September 8th, the anniversary of Star Trek’s television debut, has become Star Trek’s version of Star Wars’ May the Fourth celebration.

Star Trek Day seems to be a perfect opportunity for Hallmark to sneak preview the 2021 Hallmark Star Trek ornaments. Stay tuned!

2020 Star Trek Storytellers Hanging Around

Kevin Dilmore has announced that the 2020 Hallmark Star Trek Storyteller ornaments will be available until the entire series has been produced.  This means Kirk, Sulu, Uhura and the Enterprise tree topper will be available to purchase in 2021 and 2022.

We still have Spock, McCoy, Scotty and Chekov to be released over the next two years. Although there hasn’t been any official announcement, it is likely we will see Spock and Scotty in 2021 and McCoy and Chekov in the final year.

Whichever ornaments are released next year they will be available in both 2021 and 2022.  There is still no word if the 2021-2022 Star Trek releases will be exclusively Storytellers or if we will see other Star Trek ornaments. With all the new Star Trek series that have and will be coming out it is hard to imagine we won’t see something from Picard or Lower Decks.

25th Anniversary Revisit: 1991 U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701

It has been 25 years since Star Trek’s Enterprise debuted as a Hallmark Keepsake Ornament.  Over that quarter of a century it has been followed by nearly eighty more ornaments depicting ships, characters and scenes from all five television shows and three movies series. We have Lynn Norton to thank for sculpting all of the ship ornaments but 1992’s Galileo.

Lynn Norton did a 2015 interview with Kevin Dilmore of startrek.com: “At Hallmark, Don Palmiter, Dill Rhodus and I brought fine scale model-making to the ornament business. We really had to convince our art directors we could go beyond cute and traditional and make really believable small models to be used as ornaments. Our commitment to high quality fit right into the Hallmark ideals for product. Now, I also had to fight the initial idea of having a string of garland hanging along the edge of the primary hull, and Santa Claus popping out of the bridge — true story! I wanted to make it as accurate as possible. I’m very aware of the changes to that first ornament. Because it had big, thick circuitry inside for lights, the ornament had heat dissipation problems. We had to build a big cavity into it so the circuit board would not melt the plastic. Also, the ornament had to fit into a ‘printer’s box’ store display with a limited space, and I had to shorten the nacelles for it to fit. I beat that poor design nearly to death, but it got us started and it was very popular with fans of Star Trek and of Keepsake Ornaments. When we reissued the ornament in 1996 for the show’s 30th anniversary, we used the same design.”

32) 2003 The Scorpion – Star Trek Nemesis

 image

img_0795

Abducted and imprisoned on a hostile alien starship, Captain Jean-Luc Picard is freed by Commander Data in disguise.  Together they battle their way through the corridors of the huge vessel into a shuttle bay, where they discover a fleet of Scorpion attack flyers.

Unable to open the shuttle doors, their only means of escape is for Captain Picard to pilot a Scorpion through the twisting interioir of the ship to freedom.

This Keepsake Ornament features glowing lights on the Scorpion’s wing panels ans exhaust port as well as in the landing lights.  The cockpit instrument panel is also lighted. Sculpted by Hallmark Keepsake Artists Lynn norton and Anita Marra Rogers.

The Scorpion ornament was sculpted by Lynn Norton but the Data and Picard figures within were sculpted by Anita Marra Rogers. Rogers sculpted a majority of Star Trek ornaments that were not starships and generally focused on figures.

All promotional photos of the Scorpion are shown with a clear canopy and characters are easily seen. Final production of the Scorpion included a tinted canopy mostly obscuring the characters inside.

“Look closely beyond the smoked canopy of the Scorpion ornament, and you may discern painted figures of Captain Picard and Data in the cockpit as sculpted by Keepsake Artist Anita Marra Rogers. Original designs for the ornament included a transparent canopy transparent on the ornament, but changed to match the studio model used for filming. The change came too late to alter photographs on the ornament’s retail box and other Hallmark publications, which clearly show the figures.” -Kevin Dilmore
