2023: Star Trek Mission Seattle
Star Trek Mission Chicago has officially ended. So where do we go from here? The next Star Trek Mission convention will take place on the west coast in Seattle, WA in May of 2023.
While waiting for Mission Seattle, look for San Diego Comic-Con beginning July 21st and New York Comic Con on October 6th.

Official Strange New Worlds Enterprise Image Released
The 2022 Enterprise ornament from Strange New Worlds was posted on PopMinded by Hallmark’s Instagram. The ornament will be released in October and retail for $32.99.

Artist Inspirations: Data (1997)

The 1997 Data ornament inspiration is harder to pin down than others in the line. Data is in his familiar position on the bridge but there wasn’t one obvious image the ornament seemed to mimic.
The only clue to go on is the missing headrest on his chair indicating that it is after Season 1. In the end, the most similar image on the internet seems to be from Season 3, Episode 1 “Evolutions”.

Left: Data from Season 1 with headrest.
Right: Data was seen in multiple episodes seated at the controls.

“Paint job was horrible. I know that when I am purchasing a Hallmark product, I have an expectation of receiving a quality product. It should be gift-worthy. When I received the Picard ornament, I was, frankly, shocked. If I had had the opportunity to examine beforehand, I would have passed this by completely.
Julia D. Ree, 1.0 out of 5 stars Paint job was horrible, Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2022
What a retched paint job. This is Captain Jean Luc Picard, not the Joker! Workmanship matters. Pride in ones work should matter. Where is the quality control in such things? Shame on you for releasing such a poor quality item.”
“Slightly misses the Darmok. My wife loved it, but says it looks more like JK Simmons than Patrick Stewart”

“Smaller than expected. This was good quality sturdy as any other hallmark ornaments. I was a little disappointed on the size. We have all the other Star Trek captain ornaments and was adding Picard to the collection although he is almost half the size of the others. Still a great ornament just strange that they decided to make him differently sized than the others.”

Hallmark to Unveil 2022 Ornaments at Star Trek: Mission Chicago

We are just over a week away until the start of Star Trek: Mission Chicago and now we have official word of a 2022 Hallmark Star Trek ornament unveiling at the event.
Saturday, April 9, 2022 1:15 pm – A Piece of the Hallmark Action: Here’s your first look at what’s coming this year from Hallmark that’s just for Star Trek fans, including Keepsake Ornaments, itty bittys, gift items and more. Join PopMinded by Hallmark’s Christine Taylor and Kevin Dilmore to see what’s new PLUS have your shot at prizes from Hallmark’s Star Trek product lines. Panelists: Christine Taylor, Kevin Dilmore
The timing is right for Star Trek: Mission Chicago to be the premiere of this year’s lineup with the 2022 Dream Book due out later in the month. There is no word whether there will be Sneak Peeks for next year’s ornaments, a common convention practice pre-Covid.

Artist Inspirations: McCoy (1997)

In the 90s many of the Star Trek Keepsake character ornaments were modeled after publicity stills taken to promote their respective series during their original run. At first glance the 1997 McCoy ornament appears to be just a generic pose but it bears an uncanny resemblance to a publicity still taken thirty years earlier.
Comparing the ornament to the photo (see below) the medical tricorder slung from McCoy’s left shoulder to right hip, head looking slightly off center toward his right and his right arm bent and away from his body.
During the 90s, Hallmark refrained from placing a hook in a character’s head or body so character ornaments were integrated with scenery. It is likely McCoy’s pose was lifted from the publicity photo below and incorporated with a transporter chamber to sidestep the hook issue.
