2016 SDCC Exclusive Enterprise Ornament Preorders

Preorders are beginning to show up with regularity on eBay for the 2016 Enterprise that premieres at the San Diego Comic-Con from July 20-24.

Current prices range from a Buy-It-Now on April 27th for $164.99 after shipping to an winning auction bid of $101.85 including delivery on June 20th.  Most prices seem to be running around $120-$130 delivered.

Once the public actually has their hands on these ornaments expect prices to drop a little in the short term with a bounce in value next year.

No word yet on how many will be produced in this limited run.  It is scheduled to be available at two other conventions later this year.
Star Trek: Mission New York – September 2-4, 2016
New York Comic-Con – October 6-9, 2016

Multiple convention releases is something that Hallmark has not done in the past with the same ornament but even with higher availability, the original Enterprise as a visual “hallmark” of the series, will still prove to be long sought after in the coming years.

Interview of Nicholas Meyer by Ryan Britt of Den of Geek…

“I think it’s going to be a different Star Trek. And I think that is probably good, because the thing that mainly troubles me about Star Trek is the fear of it being maybe re-treads of itself. Bryan [Fuller] has ideas, some of which I’ve heard, that are innovative and different. Different is what got me interested.

“The Undiscovered Country—according to Bryan [Fuller]—is a real sort of taking off point, or touchstone for how I guess he’s thinking about the direction of the new show. I don’t want to be misquoted and I don’t want to misquote him, but he’s fond of that film. Let’s put it that way. -Nicholas Meyer

Interview of Bryan Fuller by Scott Huver of moviefone…

“I think we will be seeing lots of crews in the story. One of the things that is exciting for me is that we are telling a “Star Trek” story in a modern way. We’re telling a 13-chapter story in this first season. It’s nice to be able to dig deep into things that would have been breezed passed if we were doing episodic and had to contain a story to an episode.

“It’s going to be weekly. And what it does allow us is, we are not subject to broadcast standards and practices. So we can have profanity if we choose — not that I want to see a “Star Trek” with lots of profanity. But we can certainly be more graphic than you would on broadcast network television.” -Bryan Fuller

Where is the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-B?

Hallmark has released all but one of the major Enterprise ornaments but how long until we get the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-B?

The NX-01 was released in 2002.  A version of the famous original Enterprise (NCC-1701) was released in 1991, 1995 (mini), 1996, 2006 and two versions in 2016. 2005 gave us the NCC-1701-A.  2015 saw the release of the NCC-1701-C from Yesterday’s Enterprise.  The Next Generation’s NCC-1701-D was first released in 1993 and followed twife in 1995 (mini) and 2012.  The NCC-1701-E from First Contact was released in 1998 and again in 2001 (mini).  The Star Trek series was “rebooted” when the film series offered up an alternate timeline and an alternate Enterprise. An ornament soon followed in 2010 to show off this new Enterprise.

Hallmark even gave us the unlikely release of a future’s version of the Enterprise from the last episode of the Next Generation series.  The 2007 release has the familiar NCC-1701-D from the series but now sports a third nacelle.

Hopefully on July 20, 2016 we hear news of the NCC-1701-B’s 2017 release.

“Arena”

“I love Star Trek, so this was one ornament I really wanted to do! I sculpted the characters on the computer, so I got to print them out in 3D and pose them to make sure everything fit together well. The real challenge was making the rock look real—that’s what I like the most. I wanted it to have a nice texture that felt like limestone.” -Valerie Shanks

“Being the first generation to be introduced to television at an early age, I was entranced by the imaginative sets and props that were constructed to bring stories to life,” Lynn says. “As crude as they were, the science-fiction artifacts of the early 1950s still inspire me—especially when I get a chance to sculpt one of them.  I have to say that the “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” space-station ornament is still my favorite. It was the most challenging sculpture for me and the Keepsake engineering staff,” he says. “My idea to offer it with docked miniature starship ornaments turned out to be a winning combination with Star Trek fans.” -See more at: http://explore.hallmark.com/keepsake-ornaments/artists/lynn-norton/

“I consider the ships I have sculpted to be like characters rather than objects,” he says. “Each is recognizable, and almost as specific as a human face. I’m looking at them as a fan, of course — I’ve been watching since the first broadcast—but also as a sculptor who appreciates their beauty and qualities as icons.” – See more at: http://www.startrek.com/article/hallmark-sculptor-lynn-norton-on-the-storied-history-of-trek-keepsake-ornaments#sthash.oYP92Sr0.dpuf

San Diego Comic-Con July 20-24

image

“With attendance topping 130,000 in recent years—in a convention center facility that has maxed out in space—the event has grown to include satellite locations, including local hotels and outdoor parks. Programming events, games, anime, the Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival, and the Eisner Awards all take place outside of the Convention Center, creating a campus-type feel for the convention in downtown San Diego.

Over the years, Comic-Con has become the focal point for the world of comics conventions. The event continues to offer the complete convention experience: a giant Exhibit Hall (topping over 460,000 square feet in its current incarnation); a massive programming schedule (close to 700 separate events in 2014), featuring comics and all aspects of the popular arts, including hands-on workshops and educational and academic programming such as the Comics Arts Conference; anime and film screenings (including a separate film festival); games; the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, the “Oscars” of the comics industry; a Masquerade costume competition with prizes and trophies; an Autograph Area; an Art Show; and Portfolio Reviews, bringing together aspiring artists with major companies.

Comic-Con has presented literally thousands of special guests at its conventions over the years, bringing comics creators, science fiction and fantasy authors, film and television directors, producers, and writers, and creators from all aspects of the popular arts together with their fans for a fun and often times candid discussion of various art forms. The event has seen an amazing array of comics and book publishers in its Exhibit Hall over the years. Over it’s four-and-a-half decade-plus history, Comic-Con International has continually presented comic books and comic art to a growing audience. That love of the comics medium continues to be its guiding factor as the event moves toward its second half-century as the premier comic book and popular arts style convention in the world.”

25th Anniversary Revisit: 1991 U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701

It has been 25 years since Star Trek’s Enterprise debuted as a Hallmark Keepsake Ornament.  Over that quarter of a century it has been followed by nearly eighty more ornaments depicting ships, characters and scenes from all five television shows and three movies series. We have Lynn Norton to thank for sculpting all of the ship ornaments but 1992’s Galileo.

Lynn Norton did a 2015 interview with Kevin Dilmore of startrek.com: “At Hallmark, Don Palmiter, Dill Rhodus and I brought fine scale model-making to the ornament business. We really had to convince our art directors we could go beyond cute and traditional and make really believable small models to be used as ornaments. Our commitment to high quality fit right into the Hallmark ideals for product. Now, I also had to fight the initial idea of having a string of garland hanging along the edge of the primary hull, and Santa Claus popping out of the bridge — true story! I wanted to make it as accurate as possible. I’m very aware of the changes to that first ornament. Because it had big, thick circuitry inside for lights, the ornament had heat dissipation problems. We had to build a big cavity into it so the circuit board would not melt the plastic. Also, the ornament had to fit into a ‘printer’s box’ store display with a limited space, and I had to shorten the nacelles for it to fit. I beat that poor design nearly to death, but it got us started and it was very popular with fans of Star Trek and of Keepsake Ornaments. When we reissued the ornament in 1996 for the show’s 30th anniversary, we used the same design.”

Hallmark Star Trek Ornaments Price Guide: 2016/Spring

Secondary market values are based on the the average of the top three Star Trek Hallmark resell websites. All three on the list are convention limited editions.

The U.S.S. Kelvin comes in on the list at number three. This battle-damaged ship was a repaint of the Kelvin from the same year.   The Kelvin had a release of 1,575 at the 2013 New York Comic-Con. With an original price tag of around thirty dollars it is now listed at nearly $300 on websites such as startrekornaments.com, hallmarkornaments.com and hookedonhallmark.com.

The 2011 U.S.S. Defiant, second on the list, was a repaint of the 2006 U.S.S. Enterprise with glow-in-the-dark paint and has proven to be highly sought after. There were 700 glowing Defiants released at the New York Comic-Con.

Topping the list is the repainted gold-clad Uhura of 2009 from the San Diego Comic-Con.  Sites across the Internet are asking nearly $1,200 more than the original cost for this limited run of 450 ornaments.  The gold Uhura was a repaint of the 2007’s Uhura bearing her more familiar red uniform which happens to come in on the list at #5.

keep in mind we have two event ornament coming out in 2016  no word on how many it will be limited to but they will surely rise in price or the next few years.  Keep your eye out got the “Pilot Version” of the Enterprise and the Star Trek cosplay ornament of Maxine.  The Maxine ornament is a new take on Star Trek by Hallmark.  We will have to wait and see how it performs in the secondary market.

All in all, 14 Star Trek ornaments have more than doubled in price but buyer beware, there are some proven duds out there. One doesn’t have to look further than 2007’s Trip Tucker of Enterprise fame which can’t fetch even half of its original cost.  Sorry Trip.

2016 Dream Book

image

The 2016 Dream Book is available to view at hallmark.com and in stores today, May 14, 2016. We get a look the Star Trek 50th Anniversary To Boldly Go tabletop display.  It has come a long way since last year’s artist’s rendition preview.

image

Unfortunately, at under 6″ tall and less than 7 1/2″ wide, it’s whopping $74.95 asking price may have even the biggest Star Trek fans second guessing their fandom.

image

We also get looks at the “Pilot Version” of the U.S.S. Enterprise and Kirk from the scene “The Man Trap”. Both of these are the same as we were previewed last July.

As for Chekov…

“Although this ornament is not on the list, Star Trek’s website does advise its fans that it will be available at the beginning of the Keepsake Ornament Premiere.”

Lynn Norton…“This is the one that I really went out of my way to make as accurate as possible. I based it on the original shooting model with its larger bridge dome, larger deflector dish and nacelle features as a tribute to the series’ 50th anniversary. Assuming it’s able to maintain all of its details in final production, it’s more accurate than anything I’ve done before.

“One thing to note in the progression of all of Hallmark’s Star Trek ornaments. People will ask why ornaments are so much better looking now than in the past. Some of that is owed to advancements in technology. Some of that comes from the learning curve for me, and some is the learning curve for the manufacturer and mold makers. Twenty-five years ago when we started making the Enterprise, to that point we had been making cute, fuzzy bunnies and such. Now, we’re known for the work that we do on all designs. Because of my technical background and my background as an engraver, I was pushing the limits of what I understood the limits of the manufacturing process to be. And we keep getting better every year.” – See more at: http://www.startrek.com/article/hallmark-sculptor-lynn-norton-on-the-storied-history-of-trek-keepsake-ornaments?ecid=PCID-2617611&pa=affcj#sthash.91Bd8ESX.dpuf

Lynn Norton Gives Insight on Star Trek Ornaments

Source: StarTrek.com

After 50 years, the distinctive image of the USS Enterprise has come to serve not only as home for hundreds of explorers of the future but also as an iconic symbol of the Star Trek universe and all that represents to its fans. For more than half that time, sculptor Lynn Norton has devoted uncounted hours to interpreting incarnations of the beloved starship, creating Keepsake Ornaments for Hallmark that bring fans’ favorite memories and fantastic moments to Christmas trees each year (and admittedly to collectible displays all year long for many people).

As many fans’ thoughts turn to decorating for the holidays, Lynn shares his thoughts not just on his appreciation for starship designers but his own joy in helping fans celebrate with ornaments of the good ol’ NCC-1701 — and bloody A, C, D and E (just not B).

“I consider the ships I have sculpted to be like characters rather than objects,” he says. “Each is recognizable, and almost as specific as a human face. I’m looking at them as a fan, of course — I’ve been watching since the first broadcast—but also as a sculptor who appreciates their beauty and qualities as icons.”
