Merry Christmas!

Every season, just after Thanksgiving, the internet begins sprouting Trek trees. Like blooms in the spring, you get an early one, soon followed by another, and before you know it they are everywhere. Small ones, towering ones, ones that flaunt a hundred Star Trek ornaments and others that sport just one.

I appreciate your patience with the multiple posts per day over the last month while celebrating these Star Trek collections but please indulge me one last time this year.

Here’s a look back at this season’s Star Trek goodness.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Positively Trek 255: A Tree Full of Starships

Star Trek Christmas Tree Ornaments Over the Years

In 1991, Hallmark put out the first in their line of Star Trek Keepsake Ornaments: The original U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701. In the 32 years since, every holiday season has seen more and more ornaments for Trek fans to add to their collection.

In this episode of Positively Trek, hosts Barry and Dan discuss the varied and sometimes oddball entries in the Hallmark Star Trek ornament line. From gorgeous starships, to character statuettes, all the way to dioramas featuring Spock urging McCoy to shoot a salt vampire, there is a lot to talk about!

Ornament discussion begins at 11:11.

Asking AI for Star Trek Ornament Ideas (Annotated by Kevin Dilmore)

Here is ChatGPT’s list of ten Star Trek ornament ideas:

Kevin Dilmore: Ohhh, you knew I wasn’t going to pass this post up. Okay, let’s see . . .

1. USS Enterprise in Holiday Lights:
Imagine the iconic starship adorned with festive lights.

KD: You likely know just how close we all came to getting this back in 1991.

2. Spock’s Logic-Tree Decoration:
A logical twist on traditional Christmas tree ornaments inspired by Spock.

2. I fail to see how an organizational tool for diagramming all possible causes of a failure event might assist in celebrating a nodal event observed by adherents to a religion.

-Kevin Dilmore

3. Tribble Carolers:
Tiny tribbles dressed in caroler attire singing holiday tunes.

KD: Hmm. I do know a few sound engineers very capable of tuning tribble trills to fit the carol of your choice. So, what do you want to hear? Jingle Fuzz? We Three Kingons? I Saw Mommy Kissing Cyrano Jones?

4. Data’s Ornament Collection:
A set of ornaments replicating various artifacts Data collects during Christmas.

KD: You know, you say this, and it’s all fun and games until Data hangs his hologram of Tasha Yar on the tree and it’s The Needs of the Many all over again. Next.

5. Klingon Battle Sleigh:
A humorous twist with a Klingon-style sleigh equipped for battle.

KD: Okay, yeah. I’m totally on board for this one.

6. Captain Picard’s Earl Grey Tea Cup:
A tea cup ornament with a miniature version of Captain Picard’s favorite beverage.

KD: Only if we make it a series with Romulan ale, raktajino, kanar, and Slug-o-Cola.

7. Holodeck Winter Wonderland:
A scene capturing a snowy holiday setting within the Star Trek holodeck.

KD: I’m in but it’s going to be this scene from “The Practical Joker.

8. Borg Assimilated Snowman:
A snowman ornament with Borg assimilation elements.

KD: Let me finish my lyrics to “Frosty the Borg Queen” and if I still like them, I’ll consider pitching it.

9. Romulan Ale Toasting Glasses:
Elegant ornaments resembling Romulan Ale glasses raised for a festive toast.

KD: See #6 above.

10. Transporter Room Christmas Miracle:
An ornament showcasing characters beaming in holiday presents.

KD: Nope. No way. I signed aboard Hallmark to help make Christmas tree ornaments and I won’t have their atoms scattered back and forth across space by that gadget.

The list is certainly all over the place but we can all agree a Klingon Battle Sleigh would be…honorable.

KD: Hey, look! It’s an AI Keepsake Ornament! You can get it on eBay maybe.

In all sincerity, I wish each one of you out there the happiest of holiday seasons, and I remain so very grateful for your friendship and support of our efforts to bring a little more joy and happy memories to your celebrations.

Dream Books 1991-2023

Here are all of the Dream Book pages that Star Trek ornaments have graced. Print advertisements for the years 1992-1994 are shown when those ornaments were not featured in the Dream Book.

2024 Star Trek Anniversaries

Hallmark has had 17 releases celebrating Star Trek anniversaries beginning in 1991.

Will we see Hallmark celebrate any of the six big Star Trek anniversaries in 2024?

Update: Embarrassingly, I left off The Cage from the list of 2024 anniversaries. Star Trek’s original pilot will be celebrating its 60th anniversary next year. In 2014, we were fortunate enough to get Vina for the 50th anniversary so it’s possible we will see a 60th anniversary ornament. A Talosian perhaps? A The Cage pilot Enterprise ornament similar to the Where No Man Has Gone Before pilot Enterprise to 2016? Hallmark already announced a Pike ornament from Strange New Worlds so that seems to rule out Pike individually or in a scene. Stay tuned!

And here is the entire list of 2024 Trek anniversaries…

/Film Announces ‘23 Hallmark Ornaments

“Hallmark has been regularly producing “Star Trek” ornaments for decades, starting in 1991 with a handsome version of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Many Trekkies keen on collecting likely also have intimate knowledge of the 1992 talking Galileo shuttlecraft that featured original dialogue from Leonard Nimoy saying “Happy Holidays.” The 2023 season keeps the tradition going with a quartet of new ornaments culled from various points of “Star Trek” history.”

By the Numbers: The Big Six – Hallmark’s Most Elusive Star Trek Ornaments

If you are a Star Trek ornament completist there are six ornaments which will prove the most elusive. Some were produced in small quantities for conventions which immediately made them collectibles. Some were more widely available but are rarely seen up for resell because owners likely do not know they have something of value. Both quantity and collectability awareness contribute to an ornament’s availability and price in the secondhand market.

2009 Gold Uhura

Usually seen in “engineering and security” red. Lieutenant Uhura wore this striking “command” gold uniform. This special event edition repaint of the 2007 Lieutenant Uhura limited quantity ornament was created for exclusive distribution at major collector events and conventions.

Uhura was the first Star Trek Event Exclusive ornament and was originally available at San Diego Comic-Con. Only two Uhura Gold ornaments have been available on eBay in the past twelve months with the last one being more than six months ago. Secondhand websites list the ornament for $1,799.99.

Quantity: Low, 450 units
Demand: High
Collectability awareness: High

Original retail: $25.00
2022-23 eBay prices: $1,315 – $2,015

2011 U.S.S. Defiant

The U.S.S. Defiant features luminescent paint that allows the ornament to glow-in-the-dark as seen in “The ThoIian Web”. In celebration of Star Trek’s 45th anniversary, Hallmark produced 700 U.S.S. Defiant ornaments available at New York Comic-Con.

Although more units were produced than the 2009 Uhura Gold, the quantity still pales in comparison to recent event exclusives that can number over 3,000. Ornament resell websites list this ornament as high as $3,999.99.

Four Defiants have been sold on eBay in the past fourteen months and one is available now with an asking price of $1,899.99.

Quantity: Low, 700 units
Demand: Very High
Collectability awareness: High

Original retail: $32.95
2022 eBay prices: $1,285 – $2,000

2016 Maxine

Limited to a production run of 100 for Star Trek’s 50th Anniversary, there isn’t a lot that screams Star Trek with this ornament. Hallmark’s familiar Maxine sports the delta logo badge on her shirt and a Star Trek shopping bag hangs from the crook of her elbow. The packaging is labeled with the Trek 50th Anniversary insignia and a blue starburst announces it is a “convention exclusive”.

Nothing on the packaging of this ornament mentions it is limited to only 100 pieces, a far lower number than any other Star Trek event exclusive ornament. There was some turnover initially but the Maxine ornament today is rarely on eBay.

Originally available at Star Trek: Mission New York and New York Comic Con for $30.00. There is not a lot about the Maxine ornament that screams Star Trek. She sports the Delta insignia and her shopping bag has a Trek reference written on the side but other than that the ornament is ALL Maxine from her sunglasses down to her bunny slippers.

Only three Maxine ornaments have been sold on eBay in the past three years, none of which have were offered in the past ten months.

Quantity: Very low, 100 units
Demand: Moderate
Collectability awareness: High

Original retail: $30.00
2022 eBay price: $800

2018-19 Spock Decoupage

Mr. Spock brings a holiday wish to “Live long and prosper. ” Failing to add this stylized decoupage ornament of the resourceful Vulcan to your Christmas tree would be highly illogical. The ornament is ready to hang on your Christmas tree with a hanger attachment.

Even though it was available in Walmarts over two holiday seasons, the Spock decoupage was not plentiful. Stores never seemed to have more than a half dozen originally and resupply was far and few between.

This ornament likely hangs on many many trees across the United States but it is doubtful owners know it can command a high price and it is seldom seen on resell sights. Three have been sold on eBay in the past sixteen months but none have been offered up in the last twelve months.

Quantity: Unknown
Demand: Moderate
Collectability awareness: Low

Original retail: $5.97
2022 eBay prices: $154 – $178

2018 Galileo Decoupage

This Walmart exclusive Galileo ornament was only available for one year and is the more sought after of the two decoupages.

With such a low retail price it is likely owners have no clue that the ornament could bring in a high asking price on eBay. The last one sold on eBay was sixteen months ago.

Quantity: Unknown
Demand: Moderate
Collectability awareness: Low

Original retail: $5.97
2022 eBay price: $291

2021 Picard

A Christmas tree ornament that captures the essence of Captain Jean-Luc Picard? Make it so! Captain Picard was among the youngest Starfleet officers ever to command a starship. Relive his missions at the helm of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701-D from “Star Trek: The Next Generation” with this figural decoration.

This Picard ornament was only available on Amazon in December of 2021. It sold out quickly and it is unclear how many were made available but we know at least of at least 169 were sold since we have that many purchase reviews listed on the site.

Many consumers didn’t know they were getting a rare ornament when they stumbled across them on Amazon. They have no idea the Picard ornament can fetch a high price on eBay. Prices will range wildly depending on the knowledge of the seller. It has been sold as a “buy it now” for less than $20 and it has been listed as “rare” and sold for over $130.

Only two of 2021 Picard ornaments have been sold on eBay since it was originally released on Amazon but none have been listed in the past fourteen months.

Quantity: Possibly Very Low (Unknown)
Demand: Moderate
Collectability awareness: Low

Original retail: $9.00
2022 eBay prices: $17 – $133

The 50th Anniversary 2010 Mystery is Solved

As you may have seen, Hallmark’s 50th Anniversary weekly retrospective highlights an ornament from each year since 1973. A couple of weeks ago the year 2010 was missed which prompted an unofficial substitute 2010 honoree. Hallmark’s Kevin Dilmore has since reached out with the official ornament that was intended for 2010 representation.

“Well, I tracked down the issue on the 2010 Flashback Friday post! I’ve learned that a technical error on our social posting platform caused us to miss the Sept. 29 posting for 2010. HOWEVER, I have permission to share with you the post that didn’t make it. (There are no plans to post this one out of order.)” -Kevin Dilmore

Happy #Keepsake50th! Here’s another #FlashbackFriday: Who will you be under the mistletoe with this Christmas? Santa will undoubtedly be with Mrs. Claus at their Kissmas Cottage in Kringleville (after making his deliveries, of course). This first-in-series ornament was designed by beloved Keepsake Artist Ken Crow (retired). Ken added a special lever at the bottom you can move to see the couple smooching. Mwah!

The absence of any Star Trek ornaments in Hallmark’s retrospective has been a little disappointing but Amok Time represented proudly for about 24 hours.
